The compounds  Sudan I to IV are azodyes. Their matabolites cause cancer and are discussed to damage the genom. It is forbidden to use them in foods. Products where these dyes could be detected must be destroied (decision 2004/92/EG from 21.01.04).

The group of the sudan dyes includes compounds like Sudan I to IV, sudan orange G and sudan red B. Together with the dyes butter yellow and para red they belong to the class of synthetic azo dyes. The metabolites are discussed to cause cancer. Although the compounds are forbidden in europe in third party countries the dyes are used to enhance the color intensity e.g. in chili and in paprika.
